Apparently 7zip can open them for viewing
Is it the '7zip' on REPO or 7zip for Windows?
I have installed 7zip on REPO but unable to start it reading .max file
There are websites online providing FREE service
1. convert .max file to .pdf
or
2. reading .max file online.
But they need filling in my credit card detail. I hesitate to proceed
I wouldn't. As I listed, Blender is in Ubuntu repo and/or you can compile PaperMan.
However digging deeper Blender requires a conversion (if original 3DS Max is unavailable).

So perhaps try PaperMan first.

Found this online...
Opening . max files using 3ds Max compatible software
Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite that offers an alternative for working with . ...
Cinema 4D is a powerful and user-friendly 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software developed by Maxon.
The .max of 3ds max and the ones from Paperport are very unlikely to be even remotely similar. 3D Studio Max is (like blender) a program for creating three dimensional graphics and it's .max format is its native format for storing complete scenes including all kinds of effects. Paperport on the other hand is a program for scanning documents and keeping track of them - a document management program, which was for a time packed in with various scanners and similar devices. The reason for the '.max' extension is that an older version of the program went by the name of 'MaxMate'.

I found from using Recoll that multiple applications can share the same MIME type. Which can be confusing when mapping to viewers. For example Scribus *.sla can be viewed in XML editor. Likewise CherryTree and others like SVG.
